Thursday Night, Passover Meal, The Lord’s Supper

“…And as He had loved those who were His own in the world, He loved them to the last and to the highest degree.”        John 13:1B (Amp)

“I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another.  Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another.”            John 13:34 (Amp)

“… I am going away to prepare a place for you.”        John 14:2B (Amp)

“…I will come back again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also.”     John 14:3B (Amp)

“If you really love Me, you will keep and obey My commands.”     John 14: 15 (Amp)

On occasion I have found need to travel away from home, sometimes without my family.   In these times, however short, I feel I must prepare my family for my absence.  Direction must be given so the home stays on course.  Laundry is washed, folded and put away for use.  Food is stocked, chores and responsibilities are written down for reference and emergency numbers are posted.  All these actions are done for and with my family in mind.  In this preparation my family is assured my heart is with them and my thoughts are of them and I’ll be home soon.

John 13: 1 Says on that Passover celebration Jesus already knew He was leaving, going back to the Father.  But first He would suffer a horrific death.  For the Disciples, the next 3 days would be a time of grief, uncertainty, confusion and overwhelming fear.  They would scatter, run and hide.  They would doubt His life and words.  Life would be turned upside down!  Jesus would keep the Disciples on course by his instructions.

How many times in our own lives (disciples) do we encounter overwhelming pain, grief and fear?  Life seems full of “upside downness”.  Confusion crashes in bringing uncertainty.  As Christians we are prepared by God’s Word for these heavy and challenging times for “in this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33).   We look to the “ever present help” our overcoming Lord.  We hear His message.  He gives joy for the journey and our hearts are stilled in the knowledge He is with us and He will return.

So, what was the message Jesus gave the Disciples that night? Jesus said:

First, I want you to know I dearly love you.  I have served you by my love, I serve you now. I give you all of Me.  I love you with every fiber of my body and every ounce of my blood.   Trust me to take the unseemly parts of your life and make them clean.  Let me wash away the heaviness of the world and ready you for the work at hand.  Tomorrow I will go out to the hill, I will wash your souls and ready you for eternity.  Encourage each other and serve each other as I have done for you.  So now I tell you “love one another”!  Lay down your life for each other and dare to do life one with the other.  You can do this because I dearly love you.

Second, know this.  I truly love you.  My love won’t fail.   I’ll go.  You will stay for now but my love will bring me back to you.  Don’t ever be confused on this matter, in time and at the right time, love will bring you home to Me.  All of mine will come home to the Father’s house.   For now, just keep on doing the will of the Father.  Practice all the things I taught you.   Remember to love those who are mine.  Bring more with you as you travel home.  Love is the road to home.  This is a one-way road often marked with sacrifice and suffering, always lit by the light of joy and the great hope of your reward - Me.  Keep looking up. I’ll be standing as the Door to home.  You can do this because, remember, I truly love you.

Third, beyond all doubt, all of heaven and earth is convinced of these three words:  I love you!  I trust you to infiltrate this outpost called Earth with the Kingdom of our Father.  Love those who don’t know me.  Let love speak in your words and actions.  You have been given a GPS to bring you home.  Follow the scripture, my commands and love, love, love.   The way might get dark, the load heavy, and sometimes storms will come, but I’ll be there with you even though you may not see me.  You won’t lose your way.  Just follow the GPS commands.  You can do this because all of heaven and earth knows I love you.

You and I know what happened on the third day!  The Disciples witnessed the only begotten Son raised by the power of the Holy Ghost in triumph and glorified by His Father.  The Bible tells us He ascended some 40 days later and then shortly thereafter, the Father sent the Holy Ghost to help, strengthen, teach, give direction and revelation, to endue us with power and baptize us with the royal love of Jesus.   This is the Spirit of the One who loves us so greatly, so deeply, so wonderfully, so profoundly and even beyond description of language.

Days of darkness come to us all.  Days of questioning and loneliness, when storms are fierce, and fear seems to flood our souls.  Days when hurt and pain stand tall in our lives overshadowing the light momentarily.  Remember Him.  Look up, Jesus is the Door.  Follow the GPS!  Serve with His love.  Love with His love.  Follow the road of love.  Love, love, love.  Others will follow your lead on the Love road.  He’s with you on this road.   His love will take you through.

You can do this!   Just remember, heaven and earth know you are dearly and truly loved!
