In today's fast-paced world, the commitment to Bible reading and studying is more crucial than ever. Engaging with Scripture not only nourishes our spiritual growth but also provides guidance and wisdom in our daily lives. As believers, we discover that dedicating time each day to read and reflect on God's Word deepens our understanding of His will and purpose for our lives, empowering us to navigate life's challenges with grace and clarity.
A consistent Bible study routine fosters a deeper relationship with God. Engaging in prayer alongside reading enables us to cultivate a more intimate dialogue with the Creator. This growing connection helps us listen for God's voice amidst the noise of daily life. The transformative power of His Word illuminates our paths and strengthens our resolve, reminding us that we are never alone in our journey of faith. **Acts 17:11** commends the Bereans for their diligent study: “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Acts tells us that we should receive the Word eagerly and ready, searching it daily.
Look into it earnestly. Scout out what it says, run references, and look up the original language for a deeper understanding of the words used. That is ‘searching’. You should know it so you can tell “whether these things are true.” A key aspect of reading God’s Word is this: Are you willing to accept it? We say His Word will guide you in life, and this is true, but what good is it if you won’t accept the guidance?
Learning from Scripture is not merely for personal growth; it also fosters a sense of community among fellow believers. By sharing insights and reflections during Bible study groups, we can encourage one another and grow together in faith. **2 Timothy 2:15** instructs us, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” Diligent: industrious, hardworking. Who likes the slacker? Answer—no one, not even God. Our God believes in hard work; after all, He started everything by working, creating, everything. He is not pleased when we are slack in reading His Word either. As a teacher, it is not just about skills and being a good orator; you must ‘correctly teach’ the Word of God. **James 3:1** cautions, “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” This fellowship not only strengthens our individual commitments but also builds a supportive church community that thrives on collective wisdom and shared experiences.
Moreover, setting specific goals for Bible reading can reinforce our dedication. **2 Timothy 3:16** warns us,
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…..We Christians can totally TRUST in the Lord by studying the Bible because it is God's plan for our lives—our steering wheel, if you will. It is God’s Word, inspired and given by God, and my God is big enough to preserve it as He intended for over 6,000 years (from Genesis to Revelation). God's Word is totally sufficient for all of our needs; we don't need anything else.
Why study with your Bible? Because even in our ‘enlightened society’, people are easily led astray. Even with technology at our fingertips, people do not verify what they hear, read in books, pamphlets, flyers, etc., see on TV, or hear in a church, temple, or mosque. You have the responsibility to verify what every preacher, teacher, or ‘expert’ is telling you concerning God, spiritual matters, or spiritual enlightenment. If you need to research the Bible against all other writings of antiquity, go ahead. What you will find, if you search with an open heart and without prejudice, is that the Bible holds up better to scrutiny than any other religious or historical documents.
Commit this year to read AND study the Bible at your own pace. Pray over it before you begin, and as you read, ASK the Holy Spirit to guide you in your understanding. Fathers, take the lead in your family. Wives, submit to your husbands if needed as he leads your family in Bible reading, support it, and participate in it. Help your family understand God’s Word; have your children read along with you, and let them participate as well. Families: Be consistent. Make it non-negotiable.
If you do this, I believe you will have to confess at the end of 2026 that God has made you a stronger spiritual person and that you will be closer to Him in every aspect of your life.
In conclusion, committing to Bible reading and studying is essential for spiritual growth. It enriches our lives, cultivates deeper relationships, and empowers us to make a positive impact in the world around us. In moments of clarity, prayer, and community, our reading becomes more than a routine; it becomes a way of life that brings us closer to God and to one another.
May God bless you on this journey of Bible reading and study!
